ABOUT SCHOOL

EDUCATE CHEPANG is a programme launched by late Mr. Kishore Chandra Dhungana in early 90s      with a noble cause of educating the children of Chepangs and to establish their identity to give basic education for the Chepangs. It took quite some time for him to convince them the importance of education in the beginning. Then he brought down 20 children for the first year in class 1. As they started realizing the importance of education hence in 2057 B.S. the school was founded where they are provided with every facility including accommodation, clothing, reading and writing materials and food for free in a school called Antyodaya Janajati Awasiya Vidhyalaya in Chitwan district of Nepal with his personal resources.
Currently, there are more than 211 students from poor Chepang families getting free education. From the year 2061 B.S., the school has been made a lower secondary school and it is managed by “Kishore Chandra Dhungana Smriti Sarbajanik Saichik” trust.

Children's voice

Shushma

Shushma is 12 years old and studies in class 5.
"I like staying here in school as I do not have to do household work and I can study. There is a government school near my village, but the teachers there do not come regularly and do not teach properly; they come in and sit, but do not teach. The food is also much better here as it is given timely and regularly. I feel bad when I see my parents staying hungry to feed me and my four brothers and sister. I want to be a "big person" in the future, like a pilot or an engineer"

Shyam

Shyam is 10 years old and studies in class 2.
"An uncle of mine came down from my village and wanted to take me back. I refused to go with him. I want to be educated and I like to wear nice clothes the school provides me. In my village, it is a very hard life as there is not enough food, especially in April. I want to be a teacher so I can teach the children of the villages"

Maya

Maya is 12 years old and studies in class 5."I have to walk one day in the jungle to get back home. There, we do not have rice so we eat maize. When the maize is finished, we go to the forest to dig for roots. We weave basket and exchange it for salt - the one thing we can not find in the jungle. We do not have any light at night, not even candles or lamps".

Rishesh

Rishesh is 13 years old and studies in class 6."I want to be a teacher to disperse knowledge and be an inspiration for the students, as they are for me now. Education, to me, means development."
